Study Links Redheads to Higher Sexual Desire and Orgasm Rates

Redheads may have more than just their striking hair color setting them apart. Studies suggest that red-haired women not only experience unique pain thresholds but also report higher sexual desire and more orgasms than women with other hair colors.

According to Professor Irene Tracey, an Oxford University neuroscientist and vice-chancellor, redheads exhibit genetic differences in pain perception. Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today program, Professor Tracey explained that redheads are less sensitive to pain from electric shocks but have heightened sensitivity to pain caused by extreme heat or cold. These variations are linked to a mutation in the MC1R gene, which influences both hair color and sensory receptors.

A separate study conducted by Dr. Werner Habermehl at the University of Hamburg found that red-haired women have the highest orgasm rate among all hair types, with 41% reporting frequent orgasms. Habermehl also noted that red-haired women tend to have more active sex lives, more partners, and more frequent sexual activity than their counterparts.

Supporting these findings, a 2022 Czech study observed that red-haired women exhibited “higher sexual desire, higher sexual activity, and a higher number of sexual partners.” However, researchers also cautioned that these traits may not be purely genetic. Social stereotyping—labelling redheads as being more sexually permissive—could also play a role in shaping behavior and perceptions.

Redheads are a rare group, making up less than 2% of the global population, which makes them a compelling subject for genetic and behavioral research. As scientists continue to study the relationship between genetics, pain thresholds, and behavior, redheads remain a fascinating example of the interplay between biology and social factors.
