Should the Toronto Maple Leafs invest more heavily in their squad?

In the realm of sports, there is no doubt that ice hockey is considered one of the top ten most popular sports on a global scale. Ice hockey has found many fans in regions such as the United States and other countries such as Finland and Russia. In particular, ice hockey is immensely popular in Canada, where it is the national winter sport and arguably the country's most popular game.

Firstly, in Canada the Toronto Maple Leafs are a professional ice hockey team that are based in Toronto. They have put together one of the most talented teams in hockey. However, with so many outstanding hockey teams, it is worth exploring whether or not the Toronto Maple Leaf’s should invest more heavily in their squad to get ahead. The Toronto Maple Leafs have already started this year’s campaign with matches that started on October 12th 2022. This 2022-23 season will conclude when they take on the New York Rangers on Thursday April 13. The Toronto Maple Leaf’s previous match was against Boston Bruins in NHL which resulted in their opponent winning the match with a result of 4-3.

The Toronto Maple Leaf’s have a jam packed schedule and they are playing their next match on 18 Jan 2023 against Florida Panthers in NHL. In fact, it is now a popular activity for many ice hockey fans to bet on the upcoming games to add a little extra excitement into the event. With opportunities to win money online by betting on these games, it is now easier than ever to check out the odds to see what team the favourite is to win. What’s even better is that you can revisit and check the updated odds as each game is played meaning that you are never kept out of the loop.

In terms of their players, The Toronto Maple Leafs announced that the hockey club has acquired forward Dryden Hunt from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for forward Denis Malgin. This should give the squad an advantage over other teams as Hunt has had success in his career as he has registered 42 points consisting of 14 goals and 28 assists in 193 career regular season games over the course of his six-year NHL career with the Florida Panthers, Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers and Colorado Avalanche.  Furthermore, the March 3 NHL trade deadline is looming, and the Toronto Maple Leads could benefit from adding in a few extra players before the playoffs.

There is also the opportunity to cement players who have already brought success to the team. Auston Matthews is predicted to achieve 40 goals and over 90 points this season and has already gotten the reputation of being one of the top 20 or so players in the NHL.  Currently, Auston Matthews is free to sign a contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs and he still has one year left on his deal for the 2023-24 season. The team should also invest in getting Bunting to sign with the leafs long term. Unlike Zavh Hyman and Ilya Mikheyev who have went after higher salaries, it would be a great move to get Bunting to dedicate himself to the squad. It will also be beneficial for the team to get Matthew Knees to assist the team in order to bring them to new heights.

Furthermore, it is also quite apparent that investing in the health of their players could be critical for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Last season, their best four forwards checked in for 305 matches out of 328 games. This witnessed Rielly, Kerfoot and Brodie playing 82, Bunting playing 79, Kampf playing 82 and Engvall playing 78 resulting in the team being very healthy. There have also been some evidence of injuries occurring.

For example, T.J Brodie was placed on injured reserve with an injury to his rib following the match on Sunday January 2023. Placing more emphasis on staying healthy through proper nutrition and sleep should be a priority for the Toronto Maple Leafs if they are to stay on top form for any upcoming matches. The Toronto Maple Leaf’s should also invest more time and money into the resources and facilities on offer for the team. It is advisable that they manifest a good process and a solid structure to organize their team so that they can be set up for success in the future.

In summary, with ice hockey being one of the most favored sports in the world and particularly in Canada, the pressure is on for certain teams like the Toronto Maple Leaf’s. Indeed, with the right mindset, proper investment in sustaining old players and acquiring new players as well as a solid effort towards improving the health of their squad, the Toronto Maple Leaf’s could be on track to yield impressive results in the coming months. In this light, why not keep an eye out for the Toronto Maple Leafs scheduled matches that are taking place in the future to see whether these improvements will pay off.
