Dry skin is an all too common problem for both men and women, with some women unable to find the right balance between having dry skin and wearing makeup.

However, there are ways to still get that perfect makeup look while lowering the chances of your skin drying out completely. Liquid foundation, exfoliating, and avoiding certain types of products will give you the makeup look you want, without desert-dry skin.

Skin and Makeup Routine for Dry Skin

Exfoliate

The first step is to exfoliate regularly. While it isn’t advised to exfoliate every day, dry skin does need it more than regular or oily skin. You want to remove the dead layers of skin and apply makeup to newer, healthier skin.

Make sure you are still gentle with your skin, though. Dry skin can be tender, and you need to ensure you aren’t trying to scrape every layer of skin off. Exfoliating results may take time, and you will need to be patient.

Face Masks

While you can’t, and shouldn’t, exfoliate every day, you should be using a face mask regularly. Depending on how dry your skin is, you may need to complement your moisturizing products with a face mask.

Face masks are the perfect way to reinvigorate the skin and help new and healthy skin cells come to the surface. .

Moisturize

Speaking of moisturizing, before you apply any makeup, you need to do it. Makeup tends to dry the skin out at one point or another, therefore, it is essential that moisturizing is the first step of your skin care routine.

It is also recommended that you use a moisturizer that is packed with SPF, as many experts and doctors have stated that sun damage can cause the skin to dry out, and even lead to long-term side effects like blotchiness and even skin cancer.

Pat, Don’t Rub

Using your fingers instead of an applicator when applying makeup is an all-too-common practice. However, while this may work for some, rubbing makeup on using your fingers is the worst thing you should do if you have dry skin.

If you have dry skin, the best thing to do is find a very soft applicator with which you can apply your makeup. It is also essential to pat your makeup and not rub, as rubbing will simply irritate your already irritated skin.

Cream Blush

While you should use everything sparingly if you have dry skin, the best thing to do is to use liquid versions of your favorite products. As mentioned, liquid foundation is great, with a cream-based blush being your next go-to.

It will give you the same look you are after without applying so much powder that you instantly dehydrate your skin.

Use Powders Sparingly

Speaking of powders, if you want to use them, use them sparingly. Powders will dry out your skin if you use too many of them, and while this is fine for people with regular skin, you will start experiencing problems immediately.

If you have to use powders, be slow and steady, so you only apply as much as you need and no more.

Cream Highlighter

You don’t have to skip contouring or highlighter just because you have dry skin. Cream highlighters contain a moisturizer that helps keep your skin hydrated and prevents your highlighter from cracking and your skin drying out further.

When it comes to dry skin, the more products that you can use that are cream or moisture-based, the better.

Facial Mist

The final thing you should be doing when doing your makeup is applying a facial mist. A facial mist will give your skin that last hit of hydration it needs to set you up for the rest of the day. It is also something you can carry with you and use throughout the day.

A facial mist is particularly useful during winter when skin tends to dry out quickly especially if you are outside and in a cold breeze.

Test Products

A lot of makeup nowadays comes in smaller test sizes, or there are people at the store that can apply some for you to try out. If you are struggling to find products that work for you, or you are looking for something new, try it out first.

While this isn’t a makeup routine practice, it should be added to your makeup buying process.
