2020 has been a heavy year for the whole world. It has been filled with struggles. Even though it has been very hard and a lot of us have been isolated from co-workers, friends and family – it has, in a weird way, made us come together. We fight for the same cause, we are one.
The summer has come to an end, and winter is coming. I think it’s a relief for most people to say that 2020 is soon over, and we can start on a new page and chapter.
The year started poorly – so let’s make it end in the greatest way possible!
4 Tips for the best winter perfumes
The cold part of the year is when we all get together indoors to socialize with each other. It’s more personal than siting in the restaurant, going to the movies or relaxing at the beach.
It’s home and it’s us. Playing games, sitting in the sofa talking and eating homemade food together. Just being in the same room as the people you love, warms your heart.
It’s cold outside, and sometimes even indoors. Which makes it even more important that we warm each other, but physically, mentally and through our hearts.
In this family-oriented time of the year, you’d want to smell extra special. Something Christmassy.
Here’s what you need to know when it comes to perfumes during winter time.
1. Go for a thicker perfume
A lot of people think it’s the opposite. You are indoors and you don’t want to bombarde the room with your perfume.
True.
But what a lot of people don’t know is that your perfumes fade faster in the cold.
This is because perfumes need your natural oils in the skin to both last and to produce more scents. In cold weather your skin is dry and less oils are on top, which means that the perfumes can feel lighter and not as long lasting as in the summer.
In other words, the best winter perfume is a thick, intense one. Softer fragrances will disappear within just a couple of hours.
So if there is a perfume that you always wanted, but thought was too heavy – now is the time to try it out.
2. Avoid colognes and go for EdP
This goes hand-in-hand with our first point: you’ll want to pick a stronger perfume during the winter.
A cologne usually only contains between 2% and 4% perfume oil. This means that it’s lighter and will last for just a few hours.
EdP (Eau de Parfum), on the other hand, contains 15-20% perfume oil. It’s more intense and lasts much longer. Some of them can stick with you from morning to evening.
You can get away with a cologne in warmer climates, but in winter time, when your skin is dry, then you should aim for EdP or a pure perfume.
If you want a specific brand, we’d recommend Amouage fragrances – they are known for their great winter and fall perfumes.
3. Important notes to look for
Most scents have a season where they do their best job. Fruity fragrances are usually a winner during summer. They can still work in the winter, but they are hardly as “punchy” then.
During the winter you want something thicker, something more intense. Something spicy.
If the base notes are either patchouli, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, sandalwood or vanilla – then you know it can be worn during the winter. It’s the most popular notes for Christmas. It’s hard to have a good winter perfume without any of these 6 aromas.
4. Don’t be scared of woods and tobacco
For some reason a lot of people are scared of getting fragrances that contain wood or tobacco.
No need to worry. Tobacco fragrances are not based on old cigarettes, but the tobacco leaf. It’s a mature, thick and warm smell that has no similarity with cigarette smoke or the like.
When it comes to wood, some people think of an old and boring scent. But the fact is that woods are very common in perfumes and are one of the best base notes there is in colder climates. It gives stability, warmth and security to the fragrance. Combine it will vanilla and some cherry in the top notes and you have a winner!
Look for sandalwood, cedar, oak moss and patchouli – they are great for winter perfumes!
