Brazilian Laser Hair Removal: The Latest Trend in Aesthetics

Although beauty trends tend to change over the years, some styles, such as Brazilian hair removal, remain popular.

First introduced in the late 1980s by Brazilian sisters at a NYC salon, the Brazilian is experiencing a greater resurgence in popularity throughout North America. In Canadian salons in particular, Brazilian hair removal has become the top treatment, at times making up 80% of all services. In addition, the Brazilian is no longer just for women. Increasing numbers of men are now opting for the “Manzilian’s” smooth results.

This growth appears to be due to technological advances, such as the laser, making Brazilian hair removal safer and more cost-effective than ever.

In 2017, according to research by Statista, the hair removal industry in general was worth $880.2 million USD worldwide. It is expected to reach $1.35 billion USD by 2022.

Since 2000, the number of laser hair removal procedures have increased by 51%. According to the US National Laser Institute, in 2016, 1.1 laser hair removal procedures were performed.

Brazilian laser hair removal, now available at an increasing number of locations, is a safe and effective way to remove unwanted hair.

How Brazilian Laser Hair Removal Technology Works

The pigment in the hair follicle absorbs the light of the laser. This destroys the follicle’s hair growth centre. Without this centre, new hair cannot grow.

Who is Brazilian Laser Hair Removal For?

Laser hair removal is a great alternative to shaving, waxing, or tweezing unwanted hair. The perfect candidates for Brazilian laser hair treatment have lighter skin and darker hair. This allows the laser to easily seek out the melanin concentration in the hair roots.

However, Brazilian laser hair removal is also effective on other skin shades and types.

Differences Between Brazilian and Bikini Laser Hair Removal

At times it may be difficult to understand the exact difference between advertised procedures, as many are quite similar.
  • Bikini Line Laser Hair Removal – covers 3 inches beyond the area that lies outside the panty line. At times, it may also include the top of the pubic regions and the sides of the labia.
  • Brazilian Laser Hair Removal – includes the labia and perianal areas, leaving the area completely hair free. At times a landing strip is left.

Types of Brazilian Hair Removal

  • Full Brazilian – Full hair removal from all areas.
  • Brazilian with a patch of hair (triangle, strip, custom) - Full hair removal, with a patch of hair.

Benefits of Brazilian Laser Hair Removal

  • Speed – It is a very quick process; every second, an area the size of a quarter is treated.
  • Precision and Safety – Lasers only target areas with hair, leaving surrounding areas undamaged.
  • Results – After a 3-7 sessions, hair is permanently gone. The client is left with smooth, bump-free skin and a fresher, cleaner feeling. In addition, clients can now wear the latest styles and fashions of narrow lingerie.

Preparing for the Brazilian Laser Hair Removal Procedure

It is recommended to have 4-6 weeks of hair growth prior to the procedure.

Although it is possible to do the procedure during a monthly cycle, the week before or during the actual cycle may increase sensitivity. A mild pain reliever is recommended.

The best time for Brazilians would be during the fall and winter. One must be careful if starting the procedure during the summer, as exposure can cause hyperpigmentation.

After the Brazilian Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Redness and swelling is normal for up to 72 hours after the treatment.

It is important to remember only shaving is allowed between treatments, as it may actually loosen stubborn hairs. Waxing, bleaching, or tweezing is prohibited.

Number of Brazilian Laser Hair Removal Treatments Needed

All clients are different, therefore depending on hair type and thickness, and skin type, about 6-10 treatments are needed. However, some clients may require as little as 4 sessions, while others may need 13 or more.

Treatments should be done every 4-8 weeks for lasting results.

Brazilian Laser Hair Removal Cost

In the US, a full treatment cycle for the Brazilian is about $700USD.

In Canada, the Brazilian for women is approximately $200 CAD per session, with the basic bikini line being $100, the labia $50, and the perianal area an additional $50. For men, the prices are similar as well, with the perianal being $50, the base of the penis $50, and the scrotum being $100 per session.

Types of Lasers

  • Ruby Laser – Works best on paler individuals, as it can cause discolouration of darker skin tones.
  • Diode Laser – Works best onfair to medium skin tones. It has as a variety of wavelengths, which will be customized to skin tone and hair type.
  • Alexandrite Laser – Works best for olive skin tones.
  • Nd:YAG Laser – Is best suited for darker skin tones

Finding the Perfect Provider

It is important to find someone with proper qualifications and experience. Ask for referrals or check with the Better Business Bureau, available all over North America.

As Brazilian hair removal technology continues to become more popular, finding a provider near you is easier than ever.
